Do's and Don'ts:
DO communicate: Even if the goal of your massage is to simply relax and forget about your overflowing to-do list for an hour, be upfront about any medical issues you have. While massage is generally safe, it can be dangerous for some people. Tell your therapist about any surgeries, medical conditions, medications currently being used, recent injuries or areas of sensitivity. This information is taken into consideration when choosing techniques used during your massage. Let your therapist know what your expectations and reasons for the massage. Even an experienced massage therapist can not feel what you're feeling or read your mind.
DO let the therapist know if you are at all uncomfortable. During the massage session, report any discomfort, whether it's from the massage or due to any problems or distractions related to the environment, e.g. room temperature, music volume, lighting, etc.
DO arrive on time: If you arrive in a frenzied, rushed state, it may take longer to relax and be able to take in the benefits of the massage.
DO remember to breathe. Breathing helps facilitate relaxation.
DO drink water. Drinking extra water before and after your massage will help your body flush out toxins.
DO prepare to schedule regular massages. The greatest benefits of massage are achieved over time. The therapeutic effects are cumulative, so the more often you get a massage, the better you will feel and the more quickly your body will respond. From one session to the next, relaxation deepens as the chronic patterns of stress in the body are affected and released.
DON'T be afraid to discuss any apprehensions or concerns. It's important that you be as comfortable as possible during your massage.
DON'T get a massage when you're sick. Massage can greatly worsen the symptoms of a virus or cold. Additionally, other clients can catch what you have. If you're sick, kindly re-schedule your appointment.
DON'T do any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise after a massage. Allow your body time to recover and rest before engaging in physical activities.
